Stepping in to the perfect space

Stairs, steps, or bleachers – these necessary building components have defined architecture throughout time. Now we all know the main function of a flight of stairs is to get us up and down from one level to another, but what happens when you expand that idea and make the stairs a point of interest, a destination in fact, and even better a place to inspire community!?
The Merchandise Mart entry is a great example of meeting the needs of those who occupy this iconic structure day in and day out. Here, a place has been created where community congregates, communicates, and collaborates.
Furniture manufactures are getting on board this trend as well with products that support the perching concept. A grouping of furniture in offices offers employees a casual area to collaborate, or hold informal meetings. Trendway’s Feek product shown below can be modeled after stairs, yet provide a uniquely comfortable congregating area.
Check out this sectional in the Interstuhl showroom managed by Karras Associates. Given the ability to perch on the sides of the sectional makes this an inviting solution!
You can experience this concept around town in Chicago, including the new Apple Store. Even schools are adapting this concept, including the Kellogg School of Management’s Collaboration Plaza in Evanston and Winnetka’s New Trier High School. Perhaps you’d like to explore the possibility of a perch as well!
